Compass Building are delighted to have recently completed select renovation work on the Grade B-listed Sir Hector Macdonald Memorial Tower in Dingwall. Works got underway in late October 2025 and despite the vagaries of the Highland weather, the building was handed back to the client timeously on 20th February 2026.
The contract, which entailed significant scaffolding, masonry repairs, roof works, internal steelwork and electrical upgrades was commissioned by the Highland Council as an investment project operating in collaboration with the Dingwall Community Development Company.
The works were completed as Dingwall, the market town capital of Ross-shire, and its residents prepare to celebrate the 700th anniversary since it was originally founded.
Ahead of the building being handed back, Councillor Graham Mackenzie, Chair of the Dingwall and Seaforth Area Committee, heralded the work to the iconic tower. “This marks a significant investment in the memorial and underlines our commitment to preserving local heritage and fostering community pride. The restoration will play a key role in ensuring the future of this historic building for the community and generations to come”.
Site Manager Gordy Mackay who was responsible for overseeing the work on site was pleased to have been involved in the restorative works noting that this was the first listed monument that he had worked upon – further noting that the views from the top of the tower were incredible.
Contracts Manager Gary Tuach, an avid Ross County supporter and proud lifelong resident of Ross-shire, was pleased to have added the tower to his long list of works in the Easter Ross area having in recent times been responsible for the £1.5M external renovation of the Town Hall and extensive modernisation of Dingwall Primary School and Nursery.
