This mixed tenure development of 12 new homes located in Broadford, on the Isle of Skye, comprised 4 dwellings for Locahalsh and Skye Housing Association as well as 8 private homes, brought to market by ourselves for sale through a Priority Purchase Scheme which was supported by Scottish Government funding.
The selling initiative was designed to help priority groups based within the local community, or with established connections to the local community, to join the property ladder.
The private homes comprised a mix of three-bedroom chalet homes, two-bedroom ground-floor cottage flats, two-bedroom first-floor cottage flats and two-bedroom villas, with the aim of being well-suited to a variety of buyers within the local demographic.
Fuel poverty is also a key concern in many areas, not least the more rural areas of the region however each of these homes benefit from high levels of insulating, recognising the imperative of fabric first principles to reduce the volume of energy required to heat the homes whilst heating and hot water is delivered through the incorporation of Air Source Heat Pumps.
Construction works started in Spring 2023 and were completed on a phased basis between October 2023 and February 2024. These homes form part of a much wider large-scale development initiated by Lochalsh and Skye Housing Association which on completion will deliver 54 affordable homes for the local community.
Andrew MacMaster, Design Build and Proposals Manager at Compass Building and Construction Services, said: “The Priority Purchase Scheme recognises that the number of ‘affordable’ homes for private sale within the rural communities of the Highlands and Islands continues to decline, particularly as appetite for second-home ownership in these areas of outstanding natural beauty increases. This has created a highly competitive and often unaffordable market for local residents who seek high-quality and well-priced homes”.
“We are confident that the advent of the Priority Purchase Scheme at Campbell’s Farm will become a template that will substantially benefit many more local communities by helping people currently in social housing and first-time buyers to join the property ladder.”
“With support from the Scottish Government, we look forward to the creation of many more new homes throughout the region.”
