CIOB Visit

Compass Building were pleased to host delegates from the Chartered Institute of Building including Chief Executive Officer Caroline Gumble (Dr.), and Sandi Rhys Jones, CIOB President.

This was Dr. Gumble’s first visit to the Highlands in her role as CEO and she was particularly interested to hear of the projects that are routinely undertaken by the organisation with particular emphasis on those with an accent on renewable and carbon offset technologies.

There was also extensive positive discussion around the need for continuing apprentice recruitment within the construction industry to bridge the very apparent skills gap/shortage. Thom Macleod noted that this was an issue that was very close to his own heart with Compass presently employing 18 Joiners, 1 Wall and Floor Tiler and 4 Technicians learning their trade. Sister company Orbis Services Ltd currently employ 5 Plumbers, 2 Electricians and 2 Mechanical Engineers Apprentices.

However, he concurred that many other large contractors needed to up their game with a recent local forum on the matter highlighting significant deficiencies in apprentice employment from national contractors operating locally.

Loren Elliot (M.ISP) said in a recent post that that the CIOB’s whistle stop tour of Inverness was an absolute triumph filled with incredible moments and remarkable individuals. Thank you to Thom Macleod for generously sharing the outstanding projects, past and present, of Compass Building and Construction Services. Your passion and dedication shined through.
